Stay calm, cool and collected while you ride with the Focus Ear Magnet. Magnetic acupressure (reflexology) technology will make you ride better!

Decrease Nervousness

Enhance Mental Clarity

Increase Focus

Decrease Anxiety

How does it work?

Before you begin to get nervous when riding or showing place one magnet on either side of the ear at the precise point known as the fossa. Repeat in other ear. It begins working immediately by triggering your body to release endorphins which naturally:

Increase Focus

Calm Nerves

Decrease Pain

The Focus Ear Magnets are painless and there is no need for pierced ears. Both men and women can wear them. In fact, see what a few are saying:

“Dr. Mark’s [Focus Ear] Magnets work wonders. They noticeably reduced my anxiety and allowed me to focus on riding without the typical butterflies. I highly recommend these little magnets to anyone with a case of show ring jitters.” - Andrew S.

“I have tried other products to calm my nerves at the horse show. I have never found anything that works as well as the Focus Ear Magnet. I can feel them start to work as soon as they hit the right spot in my ear!.” -Carrie F.

“After trying the Focus Ear Magnet I have stopped taking Xanax® before every class.” -Laurie D.

In this video, Dr. Mark explains the proper procedure for equine chiropractic. He walks you through a thorough a correct evaluation and treatment. Its imperative to look for an equine chiropractor with this detailed approach. This is the third in a series about Equine Chiropractic, and we strongly encourage you to watch all 4 videos on this topic found on our YouTube Channel.

Dr. DePaolo has developed a very comprehensive approach to his veterinary chiropractic treatments. The horse will NOT be tranquilized or restrained and all adjustments are performed by hand. NO mallets, implements, devices or standing platforms are used.

Since chiropractors are working with the musculoskeletal system, it can be extremely dangerous to use someone with minimal training. The practitioner should be a veterinarian or human chiropractor who has studied equine chiropractic. A thorough examination should be performed to assess the need for chiropractic care. At that time, it should be determined if other veterinary services would be more beneficial — such as a neurologic exam, dentistry, radiography or lameness evaluation.

Since the nerves that exit the spinal cord contain the nerve supply to the internal organs, freeing up the joints with chiropractic adjustments makes these nerves healthier. When this happens, the body is able to heal itself, fight disease and maintain optimal health. The goal of each treatment is to restore normal mobility to the joint, thereby stimulating proper neurological reflexes and reducing pain and muscle spasm.

Since chiropractors are working with the musculoskeletal system, it can be extremely dangerous to use someone with minimal training. The practitioner should be a veterinarian or human chiropractor who has studied equine chiropractic.

This is the first video in a 4 part series on Equine Chiropractic Care by Dr. Mark DePaolo.

Winter diets usually include supplements for two reasons: nutrients and energy. Hay and dormant grasses don’t have the same nutritional value as fresh pasture. Vitamin & mineral supplements supply the horse with what they are lacking from those sources. A good comprehensive vitamin and mineral supplement such as Platinum Performance or Horse Guard will provide the necessary nutrients to help keep your horse healthy in the cold winter months.

Also, a supplement like Excel® keeps the digestive tract healthy and able to absorb the nutrients to enhance warmth. In addition, A.B.C.’s Energy™, which provides additional calories to the body, can be tremendously helpful in meeting the increased demands from the body to maintain warmth and proper weight. It is recommended to feed these supplements over low glycemic index feeds such as rice bran.

Shelter

Horses should have access to shelter from extreme weather. Consider horse instincts and herd pecking orders when deciding shelter design. An enclosed, multi-sided structure may increase horse injury to horses on the low end of the herd dominance order. In this type of structure dominant horses will keep others from having access. The more submissive horses generally will need more shelter because they are the ones that are usually in the least favorable body condition.

Other Fundamentals

Proper dental care

Proper digestive health

Proper deworming program

Daily inspection to check for injuries

Rain and wind can cause horses to lose the insulating capacity of the hair coat, forcing the body reserves to maintain core body temperature, often resulting in weight loss. A horse exposed to wet cold weather will expend significantly more energy and burn more calories just to maintain body warmth. Here are some food and water tips to keep your horse healthy and happy in the cold winter months.

Water

Horses naturally tend to drink less water when the temperature drops. Water consumption is necessary to prevent impaction of ingested material in the intestinal tract, thereby avoiding colic.

Make sure water sources aren’t frozen.

Warm water to around 45-50 degrees F.

Add water to feed.

Sprinkle salt on feed to stimulate a thirst response.

Hay

Grass is very limited in winter and the ground may turn to mud or be frozen. A basic guideline of feeding enough hay to equal about 2% of the horse’s body weight and increase as needed when the temperature drops. Hay is digested in the gastrointestinal tract by fermentation, which produces heat that the horse can use to maintain core body temperature.

As a general rule, horses that shiver and regularly clean up every scrap of hay probably need to have their hay rations increased. Horses that leave some hay untouched might seem to have been overfed, but it is also possible they are leaving weeds, rough plants, or moldy flakes. Inspect the rejected material and purchase better quality hay if necessary.

Break larger feedings into several small meals spaced throughout the day. There is a variety of hay feeders designed to keep the horse eating and occupied for longer than when just putting out loose flakes of hay.

Pastured horses that eat hay in a group setting need to be monitored to be sure that low-status animals have adequate access to hay.

The senior horse, especially as dental health declines, may benefit from having chopped forages available. Water soaked hay cubes are a nice option as well. This will help to avoid the risk of choke. Supplements can be added to the soaked cubes to make a complete meal.

Next week we will share some tips on fundamental supplementation in the winter.

Paste dewormers have their place and are still occasionally necessary to maintain a healthy horse. However, it is important to reevaluate their use and avoid scheduled administration without knowledge of a horse’s specific parasite burden.

The most important step owners can take in parasite management is a simple fecal egg count (FEC). Before paste dewormers became customary, parasite management always began with a FEC to determine if treatment was necessary. Reintroducing this small step can reduce drug resistance, increase effectiveness and minimize exposure to harmful chemicals by only treating horses with high parasite burdens. Instead of blindly administering paste dewormer every six to eight weeks, simply administer FECs at similar intervals.

Nearly any veterinarian, including small animal practices, can conduct an FEC and will typically charge as little as $15 to $25. A fecal collection is as easy as 1…2…3…

1. Get a Ziploc© bag and write your name, horse name and date on it. Turn the bag inside out. Pick up an ‘apple’ of poop.

2. Pull your hand and manure ‘apple’ back through the closure, to make the poop be inside the bag.

3. Close the bag and take/send to the veterinary clinic or lab.

The vet clinic will normally compile a report within twenty-four hours. This report will not only determine the number of parasite eggs in the stool sample, it will enable strategic deworming by also identifying what types of parasites are present. Armed with this information, caregivers can make an informed decision as to whether or not to deworm and the best dewormer to use for the specific infestation.

If an FEC indicates the presence of more than two hundred eggs per gram, the horse should be dewormed with the mildest medication available that specifically targets the parasite in question. If less than two hundred eggs per gram are found, a follow-up exam should be conducted in sixty days to verify results and make certain that the initial test wasn’t conducted during a point in the parasites’ life cycle where eggs are not present. After a few rounds of FECs, caregivers can typically identify “wormier” horses and those that rarely carry a high parasite burden. For many low-burden horses, FECs can be reduced to an annual affair.

Perhaps most importantly, FECs provide enough information for targeted treatment and the elimination of overly harsh products like Quest and PowerPak. By knowing the level and type of parasite infestation, more benign medications like Strongid, Panacur or Safe-Guard can be employed. The benefits of using these alternatives are immeasurable, as Quest is so powerful that consuming manure from treated horses can kill certain breeds of dogs. Any opportunity to reduce a horse’s exposure to such harsh medications is invaluable.

Although this extra step in parasite management may appear to increase health care costs, FECs can create savings by reducing frequent and unnecessary deworming treatments. Consider that employing a paste dewormer every two months at $12 a tube costs $72 a year. Using FECs every three months can reduce dependence on paste dewormers to twice a year. At $15 per test, FECs should only cost around $45 a year. Combined with biannual deworming at $24, using FECs results in a total yearly cost of about $69 – a modest financial savings with a large return on overall horse health. With good horse keeping protocols, FECs can be run as little as once or twice a year and can reduce the need for paste dewormers to once a year or less, providing an even greater savings.

In addition to traditional paste dewormers and continuous dewormers, there are a few natural or holistic alternatives to parasite management. One of the most popular natural approaches involves products with diatomaceous earth, a naturally occurring chalky rock consisting of fossilized remains called diatoms. In industrial settings, diatomaceous earth is used as a filtering and absorbing agent and many believe it can filter and eliminate harmful pests like bacteria and protozoa. Proponents of this approach also claim that diatomaceous earth’s abrasive qualities can eliminate worms by damaging their outer membranes. These claims are difficult to evaluate and one must consider the possible effects of mild abrasion to the horse’s internal organs as well.

Other common holistic treatments include anti-parasitic herbs such as grape seed, pumpkin seed, sage, thyme or wormwood. Many years ago, tobacco was even considered a viable holistic treatment. The primary issue with these approaches lies in the sheer volume required for effectiveness. Large quantities of seeds and certain herbs can produce serious health issues, including increased risk of colic. Of course modern treatment recognizes that tobacco in large quantities can be harmful to health. Grape seed and pumpkin seed can also be problematic, as they have been linked to diarrhea, colic and laminitis in large quantities. Wormwood, the primary ingredient in absinthe, should also be carefully evaluated as it has been associated with kidney, liver and nervous system damage in high doses.

While some holistic approaches may provide an alternative to paste dewormers, their use must be carefully monitored. A natural approach is always admirable, yet many of these treatments fail to provide effective treatment and must be prudently evaluated. Natural remedies are not subject to the same testing and advertising standards as chemical dewormers, so their effectiveness and the veracity of their advertising claims can vary widely. As with all parasite treatments, FECs are still critical to determining a horse’s parasite load and the foundation of an effective deworming protocol.

          In Short:

Fecal Egg Counts (FECs) should always be conducted to determine the need for deworming medication.

An FEC every 6-8 weeks can identify “wormier” horses and allow the use of medications that specifically target a given parasite infection.

Although an extra step, FECs will not significantly increase the cost of horse care and can reduce exposure to harsh chemical treatments – preventing reactions to synthetic dewormers and minimizing the risk of drug resistance.

Often times Dr. Mark shares great thoughts and tips with his clients when he is out in the field. We have recently asked him to start writing them down so they can be shared with all horse owners. Here are a few regarding horse physiology and general horse care:

If your horse is chronically sore in the low back one easy thing to rule out is a negative P3 angle. Have your farrier put 3 degree wedge pads on both hind feet. Some horses will be better the next day, some take 10-14 days before you see a difference.

If your horses’ teeth “clack” instead of grind when he closes his mouth his incisors are too long and they need to be reduced. If you have had his teeth done within the last 6-10 months, find a different veterinarian to do your dentistry.

Many horses’ will have chronic tendon and ligament sensitivity and even lameness when the toes are too long. This problem is very common, you need to talk to your farrier or maybe find a new one who will back the toes up to speed break-over.

Many sore-backed horses have a hind gut acidosis that can easily be cured with a good digestive conditioner. If your digestive conditioner doesn’t do the trick, check him or her for negative P3 angles in the hind feet.

If your horse cribs, chews wood or is cinchy/girthy it is very likely that he or she is suffering from ulcers.

I don’t recommend “scoping” a horse for ulcers because you can only rule in or out damage to the stomach lining; you can’t tell if your horse has ulcers of the hind gut. If you are concerned about ulcers I believe that you should treat your horse, you will get your diagnosis based on the response to therapy. If he or she responds to the treatment what else could it have been but an ulcer, and really, who cares what it was as long as your horse is better.

We haven’t talked much about EHV-1 since last summer but it seems as though cases are continuing to pop up across the country. The most recent report is of 11 horses at a boarding facility in Orange County, CA. The multiple discipline facility in San Juan Capistrano (Approximately 1/2 way between Los Angeles and San Diego) has had 11 confirmed cases in the last week.

A horse was euthanized on January 18th with tests pending but most likely the horse was infected with EHV-1. The outbreak was first spotted on January 11th when a gelding at the facility tested positive for the virus. He was immediately quarantined but in the following days several other horses tested positive.

EHV-1 symptoms include:

Fever

Ataxia/Incoordination

Weakness of the hind end

Paralysis of the limbs

It is very important to understand that there is no specific treatment for EHV-1 and there are NO EQUINE VACCINES that protect against this neurological strain of the virus. In fact, vaccinating your horse for the EHV-4 strain of the disease (which is a respiratory form of the disease) might in fact compromise your horse’s immune system therefore making them MORE susceptible to the neurologic strain.

The best way to help help your horse combat viruses is to make sure his/her immune and neurologic systems are strong and healthy and a good start is to supplement with Lysine.

L-Lysine is a critical building block for all protein in the body. It is an essential amino acid that cannot be created by the body, so it must be obtained by food or supplements. Using a L-Lysine horse supplement at times of stress is key to calcium absorption, building muscle protein, boosting the immune system and supporting the body’s production of hormones, enzymes and antibodies.

The most important steps in preventing the spread of EVH-1 are:

Limit your horse’s contact with other horses who may have been exposed to the disease or whose history is unknown

Do not share tack, buckets or grooming tools with unfamiliar horses

Do not let your horse rub noses with other horses

After handling a horse wash your hands before handling, touching or petting another horse

Abide by all quarantines when traveling in or out of an area infected with neurologic EHV-1

To check the latest outbreak information in your area, contact your State Veterinarian or you can go to Outbreak Alert to see a US map.
