Integrative Equine Medicine

by DePaolo Equine Concepts

We’d like to showcase one of the pioneers of the complementary veterinary medicine and therapy movement, Judith M. Shoemaker, DVM.  Dr. Shoemaker’s practice focuses on complementary medicine and holistic therapy — integrating chiropractic, acupuncture, and other alternative medicines.

Dr. Shoemaker’s practice, Always Helpful Veterinary Services, is located in Southeastern Pennsylvania and although she is all the way across the country from DePaolo Equine Concepts, she shares much of the same views on holistic treatment.

Always Helpful Veterinary Services has a focus on balance and health by focusing on owner education and communication. Together with Dr. Shoemaker, clients are able to resolve many difficult and previously un-diagnosable health issues in their horse s such as behavior issues or soundness problems.

We invite you to learn more about Always Helpful Veterinary Services.

I purchased an 17 year old arabian gelding August
2010, His owners have had him on Toposol Iodine one drop a day in an once of water. I recently had blood work done and everything came back normal except for his T-3 which wasbelow normal. The previous owner said he was fine with that, however I do not know enough to know if he really is. My other vet recommended he be on thyroxin. Could you please point me in the right direction? He is a real sweetie, gets along with everyone and I want to do good by him.

    thanks a million

    • Hi Again,
I got a hold of Dr. Mark – a vet’s work is never done, right? I’ve posted links to the two products he recommends below his response to you. I will send you a private email with Dr. Mark’s email in case you have further questions or concerns.

My reply to Vikki would be: I have never used that type of Iodine before, however, Iodine is especially important for a proper functioning thyroid gland. Is he overweight or lethargic? If he is, I would recommend other types of more natural supplementation prior to putting him straight onto thyroxin. Chaste Tree Berry Powder is what I prefer to start with. If the CTBP doesn’t cut it then I will put them on Harmony. Please let me know if you feel like your horse is showing symptoms of Hypothyroidism.
      Thank you,
      Mark DePaolo, DVM
