Natural Health Bible For Dogs & Cats

by DePaolo Equine Concepts

We came across an intriguing book after doing a google search for ‘holistic dog care.’  The title looked interesting but the subtitle: Your A-Z Guide to Over 200 Conditions, Vitamins, and Supplements was what really caught our eye.

From Cushings to Kennel Cough, this book goes extensively into all types of conditions that your pet may suffer from at one point in his/her life.  The second part of the book, which is the bulk of the book, goes extensively into herbs and supplements.  This is really beneficial for people looking for alternative therapies to conditions that exist in their pets.

Next, there are thoughts on pet foods.  Both conventional ‘store’ brands and how to read their labels as well as recipes and thoughts on home cooking for your pet.  As in humans, food can drastically help or hinder a pet’s health so feeding appropriately for a particular condition can make a world of difference.  Finally, alternative therapies including acupuncture and chiropractic are discussed in the book.

The author, Dr. Shawn Messonnier, has a similar story to our Dr. Mark DePaolo in that he was trained as a conventional veterinarian but found holistic methods could benefit pets’ overall well-being.  “After using conventional treatments for several years, I became convinced that many pets that were not improving with lifelong use of conventional medications might improve if some type of alternative was available.” – taken from the preface of Dr. Messonneir’s book.

The book is available on Amazon for $17.15 plus shipping and was given an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars from 40 ratings.  Just as in most ‘Bible’ type reads, you don’t sit down and read cover to cover but rather pick up the book when you need some divine inspiration.
