Homeopathics and Horses
Homeopathics have been used for over 200 years as a complete system of medicine to treat mental, emotional and physical ailments. Homeopaths believe the body and mind operate in unison and by treating one part of the body you are directly affecting the entire body.
Homeopathic remedies are very safe because they are natural medicines drawn from plants, minerals and animals. They work by gently boosting the natural energy of the body. Because there is no danger of addiction or toxicity, they can be used in pregnant women, children and pets.
A process of serial dilution is how homeopathic remedies are created. By diluting and then forcefully shaking the solution (succussion) the remedy is assumed to increase in effectiveness. This entire process (potentization) is repeated until the desired quality and potentcy is found.
One of the most common homeopathic remedies used on horses is Thuja (pronounced Thew-Ya). Thujas are evergreen trees with short flat stemlets from the cyprus family. Thuja can be applied topically on horses to combat warts and scratches. It can also be given orally to help a horse suffering from a reaction to vaccines, steroids or antibiotics .
