Equine Rhino Prevention
Did you know that the Rhino Vaccine CAN NOT prevent your horse from getting Rhino? The only thing for horse owners to do is to control the subsequent outbreaks by preventing the horse from experiencing any un-necessary stress to the immune system.
- The most important thing is to stop giving your horse Rhino Vaccines. As a matter of fact, the rhino vaccine is one that I will NEVER, EVER give to my horses and will never recommend.
- The second most important thing to do to prevent future outbreaks is to feed your horse an amino acid supplement consisting of L-Lysine. A full sized horse (1000#) will need 23,000 mg+ per day during an outbreak for treatment and 11,000+ mg per day for prevention.
Be very careful to read the label as most lysine supplements contain between 1,200 and 3,300 mg per dose. If you use this type of diluted lysine you will have to feed your horse 6-10 doses to get enough lysine into it. These dilute types of supplements are often more expensive and often less palatable than the super-concentrated type of lysine that we recommend.
