by DePaolo Equine Concepts

With show season around the corner it is very important to make sure your horse’s immune system in functioning properly.  Here are some tips to keep your horse healthy:

  1. EHV-1 is not only spread by horse-to-horse contact but it can also be transferred through tack, grooming supplies and hands.  Make sure to disinfect stalls, trailers and tack when changing horses.
  2. Monitor your horse’s temperature at least twice a day.  A normal horse temperature is 99-101 degrees.
  3. Check your state’s veterinarian to see if there are any outbreaks in your state or in a state that you may be visiting.
  4. Supplement your horse with L-Lysine, a critical building block for all protein in the body. It is an essential amino acid that cannot be created by the body, so it must be obtained by food or supplements. Using L-Lysine supplementation at times of stress is key to boosting the immune system and supporting the body’s production of antibodies.
