Lysine boosts a horse’s immune system

by DePaolo Equine Concepts

Lysine is an essential amino acid that cannot be created by the body, so it must be obtained by food or supplements.  Giving it in times of stress is beneficial for calcium absorption, building muscle protein, boosting the immune system and supporting the body’s production of hormones, enzymes and antibodies.

Because Lysine prevents the replication of the herpes virus, high doses will help to prevent Rhino and Neurologic Herpes Virus.  Supplementation can improve immune function which helps your horse when exposed to EHV, Strangles, Rhino, West Nile, Lyme disease and other infectious diseases.

Boosting the immune system will also help with allergies, wound healing and stress recovery.  Lysine is proven to be beneficial in helping to prevent race and Barrel horses from bleeding due to respiratory tract inflammation.

Another great benefit of Lysine is that it can stabilize blood cortisol levels and helps to reduce anxiety.   Our lysine supplement is combined with brewer’s yeast, a small amount of alfalfa meal and Maple/Anise flavor to increase palatability.   To purchase Lysine, please visit our online store.
