DIY Ice/Gel Pack

by DePaolo Equine Concepts

Often times a veterinarian prescribes cold therapy for leg injuries and inflammation.  An easy do-it-yourself ice pack can be made quickly and affordably.

Items needed:

  • Palmolive Dish Soap
  • Heavy Duty Resealable Plastic Bag
  • Freezer

In a few hours this will freeze to a cold moldable gel.  Some soap types will freeze solid but Palmolive will not.  You can then bend the cold gel filled bag around your horse’s leg and secure with a polo wrap, standing wrap, ace bandage or vet wrap.

We do not recommend leaving your horse unattended with the cold wrap on but this soap is non-toxic so if the bag breaks you can just rinse it off.  Once the gel defrosts you can put it back into the freezer and re-use.  Some people like to freeze 3 or 4 at a time so they can rotate them to insure the cold therapy does the job and is ready to use at a moments notice.  This is also great for people and other pets too!
