Natural Flea Control

by DePaolo Equine Concepts

It is the time of year that fleas and ticks start to become a real problem in most of the country.  Several reports and studies have shown very dangerous side effects and even deaths in pets associated with the over the counter topical and oral flea medications.  At DePaolo Equine Concepts we prefer to use a natural approach to health care whenever possible.  Here are a few ways to help keep these nasty pests away from your furry friends.

Natural Flea Spray

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 quarter distilled water
  • 3 drops cedar or lavender oil
  • spray bottle

Mix the above ingredients and spray pet from neck to tail.  Avoid getting into eyes, ears and mouth by spraying the mixture onto your hands or a towel and wiping on the face.  TIP: Spray your pet’s bedding lightly to kill and repel fleas as well.

Essential Oil Flea Collar / Topical Application

  • 5 drops of cedar oil or lavender essential oil
  • 3 tablespoons of distilled water (for collar application)
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (for topical application)
  • Fabric dog collar or bandana

Mix the essential oil with the water and apply to the collar or bandana once a week.  For topical application, apply a drop behind the pet’s ears, between shoulder blades and at the base of the tail once a week.

There are also several store bought options on natural pet retail sites, amazon and at brick and mortar stores throughout the country such as…
