Baking Soda To Help Equine Ulcers

by DePaolo Equine Concepts

Baking Soda, otherwise known as sodium bicarbonate, has been used since the ancient Egyptians discovered it for cleaning purposes but it wasn’t until the mid 1840’s that it was sold as the “baking soda” that we know today.  It was almost one hundred years later that it was packaged and advertised as having medicinal purposes.

At DePaolo Equine Concepts we love Baking Soda!  It is a great stomach acid neutralizer and even can reduce ulcer pain.  It also helps the body rid itself of lactic acid which causes sore muscles.

Our Ulcer Rx paste contains sodium bicarbonate as an antacid.  This should only be used as an occasional (not chronic) treatment, however, and be careful not to consume excessive amounts, which can cause serious electrolyte and acid/base imbalances.

The paste is recommended for horses:

  • Diagnosed with ulcers
  • At shows
  • Hauling to events
  • On medications

Some helpful hints when managing ulcers:

  1. Remember! No soy, sugar or molasses…EVER!
  2. The half-life of Omeprazole in the bloodstream is short, so for best results always give Ulcer Rx twice a day.
  3. For daily ulcer management you can try Excel Digestive Health Supplement
